Fate of 2022 Commonwealth Games ‘hangs in the balance’ — Durban organisers

Johannesburg – Whether Durban will host the 2022 Commonwealth Games ‘hangs in the balance’ according to Gideon Sam, president of the South AfricanSports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC).South Africa had received a warning earlier in October that it would have less than two months to meet a series of conditions, or risk being stripped of the Games.Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) president Louise Martin warned South Africa it has until Nov. 30 to meet its contractual obligations, or risk losing the event.Sam has told Eyewitness News he does not know what outcome the CGF will come to yet.“The announcement can go either way to say we’re ready to move forward, or we’ve looked at our conditions and resources in the country and we feel that we should not go ahead,” said Martin.“I think the CGF could give us that answer by 30th (November).”Alec Moemi, the director general of the Department of Sport and Recreation South Africa (SRSA), is said to be working on providing answersprior to the deadline.“We have raised our issues and asked if we could ensure that by Nov. 30, we will have these issues in place,” added Sam.“The DG (director general) himself now is dealing with outstanding issues and it shouldn’t take long until they make the proper announcement.”
